International Museum Day Poem by Bill Wright

International Museum Day

Today is International Museum Day,
A website has just told me,
And I think of all those wondrous places,
Around the world to see.

The magnificent Hermitage in St. Petersburg,
The Guggenheim in New York,
Let's not forget the British Museum,
The Daddy of the lot.

Every capital city has its own,
Full of treasures not to miss,
Which one shall I visit now,
What's next upon my list.

I am afraid I am a Philistine,
When it comes to the world of art,
But in these troubled times of ours,
Culture plays an important part.

In today's ephemeral world,
Where fun comes fast, not slow,
We should all make time to see,
The glories of centuries ago.

There is less money now for art,
Museums find it hard to thrive,
But if we don't do something soon,
Many will not survive.

So why not take your children out,
And visit your local one,
Show them that against all odds,
Culture can be fun.
