It Never Seems Time When It's Time Poem by James Walter Orr

It Never Seems Time When It's Time

We sowed our first seeds of love in the spring;
Desire nearly drove us insane.
The bursts of feeling that our love did bring,
Repeated one constant refrain.

I could not wait to partake of the cup;
The nectar flowed sweet where it should.
Hungry the lips as they parted to sup.
Oh God! It’s so good when it's good.

I meant to help with the problems of life:
To make them more easily borne;
I planned to show you a way without strife,
So your heart would never be torn.

I meant to help you face down each new snag:
Yours were as complex as I'd seen.
It seemed to you that I made your life drag.
I never did mean to be mean.

I tried to build you a future to live,
Plus carry the pain of your past.
I found I had no more comfort to give;
The play had already been cast.

I had a dream what the outcome should be:
A finish for which I had clutched;
Fate penned a sad role that no one could free.
I always was touched when you touched.

Square pegs can never fit inside round holes.
A black cat can never be white.
Destiny gives us the script for our roles;
Our trails never follow our sight.

Shooting stars burn in the earth's atmosphere,
And all things will fade to the past.
One sometimes sees that which one must revere,
But things only last while they last.

Comets must follow the path that they’re told,
As planets must circle the sun,
Wandering space under gravity's hold;
And ending where they had begun.

There's a beginning and each thing will end;
And each thing will pass through its prime.
Most things will break except those that can bend.
It never seems time when it's time.
