It Once Might Have Been Poem by Barbara Vanier

It Once Might Have Been

It once might have been
That we were two roses bending in the wind
Each with it's own fragrance sweet
Living on the sun but not aloud to speak
Laughing together petals held high
Hoping for someone to pass by
To share our fragrance with someone in need
Of pleasant days thought of a care free breeze

It once might have been
That we were two gazelles with affection to lend
Leaping and running though the fields
To each other our trust we would yield
Lying in the tall green grass of autumn
Never minding who, what, how, or I thought of...
And galloping up on mountains high
We would run together to touch the sky
Then exhausted we'd lie beside each other and sleep
And dream of fawns to nurture and keep

It once might have been
That we were swans so ugly but not with sin
For we'd find each other and in the spring
We'd blossom with beauty and with beauty we'd sing
We would swim through our river of time
Loving each other but not knowing why
Our grace and beauty for each other we'd care
And with our love to the world we'd share

It once might have been
That we were children painted with grins
Playing with innocence love so fun
Playing as children under the sun
Alone and uncaring of our cruel world
The wind blowing our hair all unfurled
Might we dance and sit on our swing
To consider growing old together
Together we'd sing
