It's You Poem by Amanda Saveley

It's You

When I was young, about four years old,
You told me you were proud of me
I guess it was just for being there and being healthy
For what can a small child really do?
Was it because I was brighter than the other kids?
Was it because I was better behaved?
Because that wasn't just me
It was you, too...

When I was young, about eight years old,
You told me you were proud of me
I guess it was for being there and being healthy
For what can a small child really do?
Was it because I got all good grades?
Was it because I cleaned my room?
Because that wasn't just me
It was you, too...

When I was young, about age thirteen
You told me you were proud of me
I guess it was for being there and being healthy
For what can a preteen really do?
Was it because I stayed out of trouble?
Was it because I was different from them?
Because that wasn't just me
It as you, too...

When I was young, about age sixteen
You told me you were proud of me
I guess it was for being there and being healthy
For what can a teen really do?
Was it because I was a safe driver?
Was it because I refrained from sex?
Because that wasn't just me
It was you, too...

When I was young, about age eighteen
You told me you were proud of me
I guess it was for being there and being healthy
For what can a young adult really do?
Was it because I graduated on time?
Was it because I didn't go out like the others?
Because that wasn't just me
It was you, too...

Now that I'm older, eleven months from twenty
You still told me you were proud of me
I guess it's for being here and being healthy
For what can someone like me really do?
Is it because I'm going to college, earning good grades?
Is it because I'm doing all the things you forgot?
Because that's not just me

It's you, too.
