It Was Celtic Songs They Were Singing Poem by Daniel McDonagh

It Was Celtic Songs They Were Singing

As I strolled along the Gallowgate
One November Saturday evening,
I heard the voices of celebrating men
And it was Celtic songs they were singing.
From the doorway of the Hoops Bar
And from the doorway of Bairds,
Where the tones of Irish and Glaswegian voices,
Singing of victory, was what I heard.

The Glasgow Rangers came to Parkhead
A victory they did seek,
To avenge their League Cup exit
Were the Celts handed them a defeat.
Big John Hartson led the charge,
How he loves the green, white & gold,
In the 12th minute of this SPL game
He put the Celts in front with his 101st goal.

It was the ‘Sound of Silence’ from the Rangers end
As the Celtic faithful sang with delight,
And the Rangers’ fate was confirmed
When Bobo made it two for the green & white.
Young Aiden McGeady’s prayers were answered
As he added misery to the Ibrox men’s woes,
For he took a pass from Stillian Petrov
And slotted home, Celtic’s 3rd goal.

I strolled along the Gallowgate
As drunk as dunk could be,
My Celtic scarf and Ireland’s flag
Were proudly wrapped around me.
I stood by a Hope Street bus stop
Were my bottle of wine, I did finish,
When I got to Lambhill, I went into the Glen Douglas
And finished off the night with a pint of Guinness.
