Just Yesterday Poem by Suzanne Stroop

Just Yesterday

Wasn't it just yesterday, when you picked up that guitar
And played the first chords that began a melody?
Wasn't it just yesterday that began the journey
To some far away tomorrow?

Wasn't it just yesterday when you sang the first song
You pulled from your heart that left us breathless?
Wasn't it just yesterday when some young girl first saw you
And gave her heart away, never quite understanding why?

Or was it long ago and I just want it to be so?
Could it be that so much time has past its run together,
Like the minutes on a clock when you don't see them,
Or is it really only yesterday?

Wasn't it just yesterday when you let your hair grow long
And sang on some hot August night,
With people hanging from the trees just so they could listen?
And wasn't it just yesterday when somehow you lost your inhibitions,
And became the shining star that you were meant to be?
Wasn't it just yesterday when you danced the Cha Cha
While you sang 'The Last Picasso',
With 'oh me, oh me, oh me and you babe', echoing all around us?

Or was it long ago and I just want it to be so?
Is it true that those memories are old,
Or could they be new again if I just wished it so,
With all my heart until it happened?

Then it would be only yesterday
And we could start it all again.
Your music would be newborn,
And all of us could watch in awe
As each tomorrow unfolded, one upon another.

Yes, I know that it was long ago.
But that young girl,
She still exists somewhere inside of me,
And wants so much for it to be just yesterday once more.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
For me at least, old age makes memories that much brighter and harder to grasp the fact that they will never return.
