L A U R E A T E Poem by Jim Boone

L A U R E A T E

Just when you think
That nobody cares
Someone proves that they do

“Laureate”

Just when you think
That life is the great divider
A spotlight shines on a
Connection with a reflection
That mirrors me and you

“Laureate”

Looking different
On separate paths
Opposites attracted to
The siblinghood of humanity
The empathy of shared beliefs
That stirs up meaningful dialogue

“Laureate”

Every rose in the garden isn’t red
Every poet doesn’t have to know
What the others know to be nominated
For the highest title in the land
Equality doesn’t end with heterosexuality
Time changes everything throughout
Nothing is frozen in the past
Certainly not in translations by the un-fittest

Just when you think there’s no options
Someone sees you as a mover, a shaker, a uniter,
A teacher, an entertainer, a poet: Laureate. 2012

lau-re-ate > deserving or having special recognition
for achievement: novelist laureate; conjurer laureate;
good samaritan laureate; teacher laureate; poet laureate
