Virgilio Davila

(1869-1943 / the Puerto Rico (United States))

La Palma Real

La palma real es un tesoro
de mucho más valor que el oro.
Sirve a los campos de ornato,
a hombres y brutos dá sustento:
y es de recursos una mina
para la choza campesina.

La palma real es un adorno
en el solar puertorriqueño:
luce la forma de un paraguas
que tiene un mango gigantesco
(columna hermosa y elegante,
obra del Maximo Arquitecto)
con un extremo fijo en tierra
y un verde toldo al otro extremo,
de donde su saludo al dia
dice el pitirre mañanero.

La palma real es generosa
a hombres y brutos el sustento:
tiene el palmillo para el hombre,
y tiene el fruto para el cerdo.

La palma real da lo preciso
para la choza del labriego:
él hace estantes de unos troncos
y de otros troncos hace luego
la tablazón que necesita
para los pisos y los setos.
¿Que falta el techo del bohío?
¡Ahí va la yagua para el techo!

¡Arbol bendito de mi tierra
que tu pimpollo alzas al cielo
como un regalo de Borinquen
agradecida al Ser Supremo!

¡Que nunca el rallo te aniquile,
ni te maltrate el rudo viento,
y sigas siendo en el terruño
abrigo y pan para el labriego,
admiración para el extraño,
y orgullo del puertorriqueño.

Poem of the Day

poet Robert William Service

Three times I had the lust to kill,
To clutch a throat so young and fair,
And squeeze with all my might until
No breath of being lingered there.
Three times I drove the demon out,
