Lamplighter Poem by aric wilsie

Lamplighter

Sad hanging Street light
Leaning bent and dull
Like an old pigs ear
(You know I could do
With a change of scenery)
Outside, cold summer rain
Falls in empty defiance
(If I stay here any longer
I swear I'll grow roots)
Mesmerizing wind
Blowing a subtle breeze
Like an old fan
On the bedside table
Can a sleeping child
Be awoken?
By the habitual sounds
Grown ups make
Playing in the
Blankets of the night
These episodes
These perpetual emergencies
Grow so tiresome
You know what I mean
Like an old man
Staring out the window
Bored
Yet, hypnotized
By the dynamic static
This city seems to offer
Old friend
Good pen
Last dance
But...
Are we saved?
Busy nocturnal machines
Create a wet clamor
As they pass down
This tree's street
And
To
Me
The world still seems hungry
Sagging under it's own weight
Yet steadfast as a streetlamp
Tied down
With many black wires
And fiber cables
That need for
An energetic transformation
Or at least a sudden violent end
CRASH
Gather around and bark
You midnight dogs
Howl
At this luminous globe
Wearing a misty halo
I know your simple minds
And yet...
Change can be so...
Frightening
Like the slamming of a car door
Who's there?
Or
Is this just another window
To gaze out of
And watch the voyeurs of the night
