Last Stop

Greens and blues and pinks -
contrived pastel shades -
attempt to hug me;
try to comfort me
and know how I feel.
We walk, silently
but for the soft squeaks
we kick against walls
and head for the light.
White and white and white
- indoors and outdoors -
does not reflect well
the truth of the filth
in fake purity.
White-robed guardians,
smiling as we pass,
and floating - gliding -
not squeaking like us.
Fluorescence follows
as we stride along
ignoring the song
of the beeps and gasps
and clicks and clacks -
the seesaw of fate
we try to prove wrong.
Sitting, we take care
to avoid hazards
- wires, pipes and words -
over which to trip
and shatter this scene
of optimism
staged on a knife-edge.
Mind the cavalry
that patrols the halls:
unseen, yes, but felt -
a great armada
of hope, prayer and strength
and a love that is
unconditional.
Statues decorate
the rest of the room,
greying and weathered
by the gusts of grief
that blow in sometimes.
A seriousness
crowds around the flame,
seeking renewed heat
- impassioned vigour -
but finds flickering.
It is time to leave,
our journeys have reached
their
last
stop.
