Leaf Cutter Ant - Lincoln Park Zoo Poem by Ima Ryma

Leaf Cutter Ant - Lincoln Park Zoo

A leaf cutter ant I am known,
Cuz I eat leaves for my good queen,
And all her colony that's grown,
Thanks to the chomping of the green.
I've got a jaw that slices through
A leaf a thousand whacks per sec.
Then twenty times my weight I do
Leaf haul back to the nest, oh heck!
The leaves are not for us to eat,
But to compost a fungus crop.
If toxic leaves, then what is neat,
The fungus signals us to stop..

Come visit the Lincoln Park Zoo,
And I will wave a leaf at you.
