Learning To Speak Poem by Gillian Commerford

Learning To Speak

It amazes me how people say so much
without saying anything at all
This is how most of us speak-
the words flow like torrents
but have no meaning
they're empty
void.

I think we must learn to speak
with great care
as if speaking was a dying art
to shape each word slowly in our mouths
roll them on our tongues
between our teeth
before giving utterance-
and more than this
we must learn to revere silence
to listen with great love and devotion
to the words that are not spoken.
