Legong Dance - Poem by Ahmad Shiddiqi

three dancers in glittering costumes
two princesses whose roles change
according to the narrative
one condong lady-in-waiting

to master perfect mix
of posture, movements and mimicry
months of training are needed
first dance taught to beginners

a court dance, created in the 18th century
in circles of principality of Sukawati, Bali
epitome of classical female Balinese dancing
used to have a storyteller's accompaniment
