Life's Mystery Poem by Phil Marks

Life's Mystery

Life is a puzzle - of that there’s no doubt
And I don’t know where I’m bound
But I know I want to keep living
Until what I value I’ve found

The sun and the moon they impress us
With forces we don’t understand
Daily and monthly they move us
Like so many grains of sand

I started out on life’s voyage
Not knowing which course to take
Then I got older and worked for a wage
And I knew I had to escape

I’ve travelled many an ocean
Sailed across many a sea, and the
Lesson I’ve learned is go with the wind
If you truly want to be free

The winds and the tides they drive us
With their power we cannot compete
Don’t try to beat them just work them
Go where they want you to be

So set yourself free and give in
To the forces you can’t comprehend -
Until you find what you’re seeking
That’s the meaning of life in the end

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
7 weeks at sea and reading Alain de Botton's 'Status Anxiety' led me to this one. I know the scansion may not be pure but this was written as yet another shanty and goes well to music.
