Lilacs Do Not Rival Poppies

Lilacs do not rival poppies but
their fragrance overwhelms the competition
which, when the sun’s not brightly shining, shut
their petals to inspire inhibition.

Composed after leaving the California Poppy Reserve, discovering a lilac tree in full bloom, surrounded by California poppies.
