Lines On The Eve Of New Year Poem by Oliver .........

Lines On The Eve Of New Year

Now the rubber-tree leaves are cadaverous, and strewn
Along dry river-banks and stony sinuous passages!
This is the time you stroll out, remembering past
Festivals when cicadas blare swan-songs from tree-boles
In this region of scanty rain-fall. So instantly,
Your every thought becomes a sharp bramble-thorn
When far and near you discern the mien of Nature,
Which has a dull glowering feature, an imperious,
All around sweltering, and hard-to-bear weather
Through which you traverse, pondering over current
Drouth's overwhelming malignity! Now as you pass,
The old wonky plank-bridge almost lets you down
Into one malicious gutter, but you catch up yourself,
And come over to the river- side, wondering about your
Providential escape. And you listen to warbling
Crepuscular birds in the cooling sky, and consider
The time required for them to reach their arboreal home.
Now you too, alone, your heart fast thudding, and
Feet in much haste, plodding uphill, feel suddener
Flight as that of a hornbill homing fast! But an injurious
Stumble at the river-stone steeped in ambient
Dusk's obscuration makes you bleed and strand as though
No path ahead! Nevertheless, faster than before
You tread with your smile blooming on the new found
Road, and you hie, becoming resolute and sanguine! And now
The fervour for this coming year which you most endear,
And fresh affirming dreams that light up the mind,
Are strongly spurring you across life's barren moor!
