Lone Hero Poem by Jim O'Donnell

Lone Hero

Laying here upon the ground
Bullets whistling all around
Will I die here all alone?
Then thinking of his folks back home

Memories from a forgotten past
Come back to him in a flash
Playing with his childhood friends
Hoping the summers would never end

Thinking of his mum and dad
And all the fun times they ever had
His first love is still at home
Worrying when will he come home

The kids they always miss their dad
Their Dads a Hero for that they are glad
But days do come when they are sad
No hugs or kisses from good old Dad

He chose his path in life we know
But for guy’s like him our love we must show
He is fighting for our human rights
In far off places day and night

A hero’s welcome would be right
As he keeps us safe in our beds at night
With a tear in his eye to show we care
You are not alone out there
