Lonely Night In Yakushi-Ji Poem by Nicholas Peter

Lonely Night In Yakushi-Ji

I spent the night in meditation
in lotus position I sat
harmonious and bright
a shine like the Buddha.

My mind wandered to you
and lingered for awhile.
You walked under cherry blossoms
trying to learn their names.
Sakura, sakura you would repeat,
but you never got it right.

One day, at our hanami
You got angry
you couldn't write a haiku
and you felt so utterly confused
there wasn't much I could do.

I couldn't find you in my thoughts soon after
and could never know why.
At Yakushi-ji where we spent our time,
I remember your serene meditative face
stuck in a holy trance.
