Mary Poem by Jeff Nesvig

Mary

It's hot in the dry August dessert and no water in sight
I can feel the pounding of my heart and I can no longer sweat
every thought is a vivid nightmare and the vultures are circling above me.

if I walk just another mile or so I'll find water I know
God I can taste it it's flooding my soul,
Mary owns the cantina and she's waiting there for me
I can see the horse's watering outside
Mary save me don't let me die.

Mary's holding me while we dance alone on the cantina floor
I can smell the lilac in her hair, the piano plays so slow
her eyes are ocean's of time I can feel the cool breeze of her breath on my neck
who is that at the cantina door.

He's telling me we have to go
just another drink and one more dance on the floor
I've walked so far mister can I have just one more dance
with Mary on the cantina floor I've waited so long
and she loves me I know.

I can see Mary waving good-by at the cantina door.
