May I Have One Half Of Your Plate Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

Two cats slept upstairs
One on the mattress, the other on top of the stairway.
Just like they were able to tell each other
They came down and awaited outside our bedroom.
It was just three thirty in the morning.
One cat knocked at the door and then awaited.
It was not the time for them to eat
So I pretended sleeping, waiting for their next tricks.
Ten minutes have passed
The cat knocked again but just few gentle knocks.
This time my wife answered the knocks.
She called out the name of suspected cat to stop
Dead silence lasted only few minutes
Then repeated knocking with intense begging.
I got out of bed and opened the door.
Two cats went ahead to lead our way.
They ate one half of their plates
Then silently sneaked away like they were full.
I finishedmy cup of coffee.
Two cats returned but they finished their exchanged plates.

CHO TAO ĂN NỬA ĐĨA MÀY - Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD


Hai con mèo ngủ trên lầu
Một con trên nệm, con đầu cầu thang.
Thế rồi như nói với nhau
Cùng nhau chúng xuống chờ ngoài phòng tôi.
Bây giờ mới ba ba mươi
Một con gõ cửa rồi chờ xem sao.
Bây giờ chưa tới giờ ăn
Tôi vờ nằm ngủ, chờ ra thế nào
Thế rồi khoảng mười phút sau
Mèo nào gõ nữa nhưng vài lần thôi.
Lần này vợ đã trả lời
Kêu tên mèo gõ bảo chờ nữa đi.
Thế rồi ngoài cửa lặng im
Nhưng sau dăm phút, van xin gõ hoài.
Xuống giường, tôi mở cửa ra
Hai con đi trước dẫn đàng tôi đi.
Hai con ăn nửa phần mình
Lảng qua phòng khác như mình đã no.
Cà phê tôi uống xong rồi
Hai con trở lại, ăn xong đĩa người.
