Mermaid Dance Poem by Chhavi Anupam

Mermaid Dance

On that turn
of the valley
is an engaging
dreamy brook,
where nymphs collect,

frolicking in water
they dive,
only to surface,
and to alter
like spectacular
elusive fish,

mermaids rest on the rocks,
sprinkling water
from their locks,
only to swirl suddenly
and to break in a dance;

their bewitching beauty
this way to enhance,
when sun stealthily
peeps in through the foliage
to romance;

the cool
of the splashing water
and the heat
of the soothing sun,
touches them tantalizingly;

pushing them into
a game of
hide and seek
with their own, carnal
and spiritual tides.

The nymphs are
delicate and beautiful,
and there are princes
strong and valorous
watching them and aspiring;

but there are
monks like us too,
for whom
they are a fleeting moment
…just a distraction.

Our austere lives
look for
the warmth and the shelter
of the divine light,
can there be fire on water!

Such transitory chases,
are not for us,
we aspire
a soul-satisfying care
a permanent high;

where our journey
in this life and after
is calm,
radiant and
is of satisfying charm!

The nymphs are beautiful
other pleasures also bountiful
but, some of us
cannot afford to care
when mermaids dance!
