Mona Lisa Smiles

I marvel at our young, radiant faces,
and I wish they could talk,
for I cannot be sure if these pictures,
those Mona Lisa smiles of yours

were not pasted-on smiles,

and whether our radiance was only
faith-based,
a mix of hope and good intentions.

As I rummage through old picture albums
of us then,

I smile at our sometimes formal poses,
our starry-eyed gazes, shy, innocent and
unsure,

in startling contrast to our finished, world-wise/
world-weary, polished sophistication;

yet you are still smiling those Mona Lisa smiles,
much the same as you did then,

their visual silence strangely reassuring.

Poem of the Day

poet George Gordon Byron

So we'll go no more a-roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart still be as loving,
And the moon still be as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,
