Mothers And Sons Poem by Allan Thorne

Mothers And Sons

Rating: 4.0

Charley was picked up on 1st
He was drunk and had fallen.
At the time it seemed like
Too much trouble to get up again
So the medics came
And Charley ended up in the ER.

Six hours later he was still drunk
But starting to feel remorseful.
He told the nurse he was thinking
About killing himself.
So they kicked him upstairs
To the psych ward.

He was there for three days
Eating Adivan and Librium
Like an elephant eats peanuts
But it wasn’t working.
He felt real bad.
Voices, visions, the sweats.

Even with all the drugs
He knew what he needed
So he checked himself out
Against medical advice.

Once he had a few drinks in him
He would be right as rain.
Everybody would be happy
Well maybe not everybody
His mothers birthday was coming up.
He’d have to get a hold of a car

And go see her.

It is a nice poem, but I wanted more at the end.

It is a nice story, a great poem, but I do not like the ending. I expected a bigger surprise, a little shock, or a little laughter.
