My Enemy Poem by Francis Duggan

My Enemy

I have few friends though that don't bother me
But I have one destructive enemy
And you may smile but to you I do not lie
When I say my only enemy is I.

My enemy has another name 'self doubt'
And at party time he's there to find me out
He whispers just remember you keep quiet
As you're dullest person in this room tonight.

My enemy my confidence destroy
He keeps me down and builds the others high
The other is far greater in the eye
Of my enemy my self destructive I.

My enemy says I cannot be a poet
Since doggerel is all I've ever wrote
And he never miss the chance to put me down
My enemy my barrier to renown.

My only enemy I've yet to see
And I semetimes feel he's living within me
And I've yet to hear him say you are good as he
And I hate him so I hate my enemy.
