My Generation Poem by Mitchell Hood

My Generation

Billy Joel didn’t start the fire
Neither did we but we stoked it higher
The Who was just talking ‘bout their generation
But from them we drew our inspiration
The world’s undergone a transformation
Welcome to the age of information
The Internet, cell phones and MTV
High divorce rates and STD’s
Tupac, Biggie, NWA
Sometimes it seems like we’ve stumbled astray
Hatred, violence, murderers and rapists
Poor kids can’t shape thoughts so instead they shape fists
We’ve got Big Macs, obesity, high cholesterol
Oversexed teenagers, drugs and alcohol
We’ve got digital cable, I-pods and PSP’s
To distract our minds from the things we aught to see
But despite all the crime and discrimination
Things aren’t so bad. We’re not beyond salvation
And it can’t be denied that we’ve advanced as a population
We’ve taken huge steps in science, health and medication
Invested in public schools to show we value education
Established equal rights for all denominations
So don’t consider these words a cry in desperation
We’re not a society gone wrong, in need of motivation
But instead consider this an expression of my imagination
And my promise to you that you can hold high expectations
For myself and my peers; for my generation
