My Lord And My God Poem by Royston Allen

My Lord And My God

I was not there when they first saw the Lord
and did not believe the disciple’s word.
“We have seen the Lord, ” they all said to me,
but it seemed too impossible to be.

He can’t be alive because He’d just died.
I’d need to thrust my hands into His side
and put my fingers where the nails had been
before I could believe what they had seen.

But the next time Jesus came I was there
and I saw His wounds and became aware
of Who He really was and why He died.
“My Lord and my God, ” I fell down and cried.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
John 20: 26-
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you! ” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God! ”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
