My Mother Gave Me Poem by Shalom Freedman

My Mother Gave Me

My mother gave me
The lesson of inner happiness
The joy of merely being alive
The pleasure of small everyday things-

My father gave me
The pains of struggle
The frustrations of the search for the impossible
The dream of greatness
Never to be realized-

I lived my life for my father's dream
In my old age like my mother
I am happy
just to be-
