My Mother Sleeps Poem by Lynn Trudel

My Mother Sleeps

Winter pours its chilling snowfall
With powdered snow that’s crisp and white.
All across the frozen lake
The swirls of snowflakes dance in the night.

And there we sit in the cozy lake house
Curled up in flannel throws
Our conversation is light and merry
As I listen to your musical voice.

I try to keep the tone and timbre
Recorded in my mind
Because I know you will be leaving soon
And go where God resides.

That day did come, that day did go
And I know you said don’t cry
But I do miss your sweet soft voice,
And the loving looks of your gentle brown eyes.

They say in time the grieving stops
But still my tears do fall
Winters past, spring has left
And summer has gone by.

Now autumns here and still I grieve
I know I should not cry
And follow what you taught me
Be strong and do not cry.

So now dear mother as you sleep
And I must live this life
Caring for my children’s children
Teaching them faith, hope, and love.

Winter will come around again
And in the snowflakes I will see
The twinkling lights that were in your eyes
And believing we will be together again.
