My Nightmare Poem by Francis Duggan

My Nightmare

The newspaper headlines read our P.M. has won the Nobel Prize
I felt spell bound could scarce believe my eyes
Johnny Howard the man who locks up refugees
I told myself this cannot be no please.

There in large print for all of the World to see
I screamed aloud no no this cannot be
There are millions out there far more worthy than he
And what does this say for man's humanity?

Misfortunate people from war torn Countries far away
For wanting a better life by Howard's Government forced to pay
By their loss of freedom they have been demonized
And by today's news headlines I alone won't feel surprised.

Howard's Government mistreatment of the dispossessed known beyond Australia's shore
And what hope for freedom, love and justice anymore?
When one such as he is honoured in such a way
I feel more than disappointed is all that I can say.

A kookaburra laughed on a gray gum nearby
As the lamp of day lit up the morning sky
And the black cat in the bedroom slept on the chair
And I felt relieved to wake from my nightmare.
