My Way Out Poem by Patrick Nandwa

My Way Out

If I could have my way
It would be my way out
Out of this crummy world
To a world where
Peace abounds for all.

If I could have my way
It would be my way
Out of this neighborhood
Where the brothers and sisters
Are only attracted to the hood
And know nothing about the neighborliness
To a place where there is no hood
And good neighbors abound for good.

If I could have my way
It would be my way out
Out of this dog-eat-dog society
To a society where
Everyone is anyone’s keeper
Where conscience pricks all
Where no one hardly thinks about
Bloodshed
Where everyone cherishes anyone.

If I could have my way
It would be my way out
Out of this leadershipless’ society
Where leaders are guided
By their bulging pot bellies
And hardly think about those they misrepresent
To a country where the led
Are prioritized
Their needs
And wants
And aspirations.

If I could have my way
It would be my way out
Out of this materialistic relationship
Where your love for me
Is promised only
So long as I can satisfy your wants
But dies in the cradle
When I fail to meet your expectations
To a relationship where
Love is not measured
By what I am worth
But treasured
And cherished
A love so unconditional

If I could have my way
It would be my way out
Out of this enslaving religion
A religion that preaches death
A religion that takes from the people
A religion that opiates
The poor and the feeble
A religion that blinds the people
To a religion free society
Where all are free
And are not enslaved
To any oppressive creed.
