Nature Of Friendship [from 'proverbs Of 400' In Tamil] Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

Nature Of Friendship [from 'proverbs Of 400' In Tamil]

124. Lord Siva with pestle and the winning flag
of the bull, gave a half of his body
to His lovely wife Umai. The great people
assign their whole body their friends.

125. O, chief of coastal land with arched salt-pan!
Similar are the words and their meanings said
by a true friend. Speaking adverse is changing
the form of a verse and claiming authorship.

126. O, chief of the hill tracts with leaping falls!
Don't desert friends who live together with you
e'en if they're animal-like. It is painful
to depart from friends even if they are ghosts.

127. O, chief of wavering sea with rising waves!
A pond never fills from severe cold. Your help
to your friend to free him from grief must be
in deeds and not by sweet words alone.

128. O, wench with fragrant tresses! Don't seek the fit
to befriend. Make friendship with rich or poor.
If you befriend a dog, won't it share with you
the tasty flesh of the rabbit.

129. The wise may have no trust and love yet prolong
the past friendship without giving up the new.
Better to have an alarming friendship
of half-foot than the evil one of a foot.

130. O, chief of the coast with staring Neithal [water-lily]
flowers! The wise men don't abuse the friends
in public. Also speaking ill of friends
to others brings insult to them in their dreams.

131. O, Wench of sweet words and bamboo-like arms!
The fit folks don't rage when they find faults in friends.
Can he who milks the cow without feeding
the calf, live? No one lives.

132. O, chief of the port where the swelling chill waves
embrace the shores! One's patience brings two friends.
The harmless thinks of the pain caused by his friend
as the retribution for what done by him.

133. O, bangles wearing wench making clear sounds!
One hides not the disease to a doctor
If one needs cure. One hides not one's grievances
to a Samaritan who hears and solves them.

134. O, man with a chest wearing a wreath of
bursting buds! People in thousands come to eat
the food at hearth when one has fabulous wealth.
Lacking wealth, one won't have friend in the worst times.
