Necessity Poem by Brian Minniear

Necessity

Like breakthrough patches of sunlight
In warm spots on the floor
But I always notice sunlight in bare feet.

As I fell to sleep last night, I thought you'd dream soon too
And that if you dreamed me, dream me true -
Patiently waiting there, opened arms

But then I toss for hours, worried
That what I'm afraid of happens
Like breakthrough patches of lightning
Left warm spots on the floor

I wake too late to these apartment complex balconies
This odd stacking of lives
These odd thoughts
Too late to go back, to change

But the alarm never woke me.
It never even woke me.
