New Foundations Poem by Mervyn Graham

New Foundations

The world gasped as it witnessed
That evil act of terror and destruction
All eyes wide in horror and disbelief
Our minds racing, hearts feeling your pain

Tears welling up inside us, flowing now
We are trying to comprehend this deed
But wait, the horrors not yet over
The towers of strength now start to crumble

We can only guess at how you feel
Your pain and anguish, your worry
Seeing your sons and daughters perish in the flames and dust
And in your time of need, words seem simple, useless

How will you all recover with so many good people lost
Pride in your country, your flag and your freedom
Will see you through your time of need
And with the world sending you our love to help repair hearts ripped by pain

Then from the ashes and rubble of those once great towers
You will rebuild and grow, like a rebirth
With the spirits of those beautiful people
Guiding your hands to form Manhattans new foundations, a New York New York

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
While shopping with a friend from Baltimore, USA in Perth, Scotland, we came across a shop (store) selling TV's. Seeing that the shop was full of people and many more were standing outside looking at the TV's on display, this pulled my over to see what the hubbub was all about. Getting closer I could see that many people were crying, crying right there in the street, not knowing why, my friend and I pushed slowly to the window to be stunned at what was unfolding.
On hearing my friends accent so many people there came to her and expressed their condolences. We did not know at that time, but through the night and following days it was discovered that someone from Perth was killed that day too. Just one of the many people who's lives where cut short that day. The visions scarred into my memories forever, I had to write this.

To the innocent who died and their loving family's who miss them dearly. Also to the New York Americans who have to build their new foundations.

I invite you to read my poems, After The Towers Fell, and Take Cover...both emotionally inspired by the tragic events of 9/11. As a native New Yorker, the lasting effects of that day stay forever with me. I plan to visit the 9/11 museum an the newly constructed Freedom Tower, to pay my respects. I went to lower Manhattan in December, just after attacks in September...couldn't get to ground zero, but close enough to leave flowers on a churchstep nearby. I will never forget the thickness of the choking air...and the patriotic pain o the many faces I saw. Turkey the world lost it's innocence that day. Thank you for sharing...and remembering. PEACE
