New Year's Eve Poem by Maja Dezulovic

New Year's Eve

Rating: 4.0

The day a life changed
A baby born
Or dead
A loved one lost
Another found
Whilst others rejoiced.

... And someone slept.

The last glass of wine
Shot
Cigarette
Or joint.
The first of many runs
And the ultimate diet.

The fireworks
Card tricks
And hyperactivity.

... While others slept.

The gun shots
Tsunamis
And a patient queue
Outside the soup kitchen.

Thunder storms
Falling stars
Snow ball fights
And unbearable heat.

...And still people slept!

A young man earns his first million
And the old man cries after his last penny.
The monk thanks God for any.

24 hours no different from the rest,
Just a replica with an altered heading.
Its worth lies in a choice between
Movement
And thought,
Or the popular
Ignorant slumber.

Perchance the world ends
Today, tomorrow
Or one day, as they say;
And they ask you in
Heaven
Hell
Limbo
Or wherever your soul is kept:
“How did you spend your days? ”
It would be a dreadful shame
To reply:
“I missed it all,
I slept.”
