Nigeria, Great Again Poem by Adegbite Adeyinka

Nigeria, Great Again

A great man united us, into one country
We are diverse in our ways and territory
Our words are strange across boundaries
Like the pathway of apposite ferries
We have Obas, Emirs, Igwes for leaders
There was nothing really unifying these rulers.

Then came the one that led us to one another
And traveled the distance to bring us together;
He brought the North to embrace the South
Soldering a bond that could go south
He was a person of glorious will
The work he did lives with us still.

There is the story, oh Fatherland
That bore a growth beyond our Country land
The sweats of men lost to build the nation
That is left to us each successive generation
Laid waste by the greed and lust in minds
Blocking our visions like window blinds.

Hear Nigeria, her sons and daughters
The wars have broken from within our borders
That love that has kept us firmly together
Is falling away like an old bird's feather
While we stand at akimbo in pride and hate
And watch, waste away, our common fate.

Awaken the strength of our founding fathers
It is borne in us, our inheritance
The times are passing, by seasons and weathers
Our hope is not in the place of governance.

Reshape, everyone, his thinking and purpose
As we battle this divide, that as a threat, pose
If we stand alone, we stand no chance
Let's all confront it assuming the same stance.
