Night Perfumes Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Night Perfumes

Night perfumes, scents
The wind carries them
As it carries
The seeds of plants:
Night perfumes
Night perfumes
The waters
Cross the saintly
Threshold.
But the church be closed.
The camel in the night
Walks slow and lewd
Over the sands
He has no lewd intent
Though he walks lewd
In the red and chill
Desert
In the red and frosty
Desert
Where icicles of water crystals
And night dew
From genesis in the heavens
lower
Grew.
There is a wind that
Speaks in Arabic
The same as a Venetian violin
Sole in that desert vastness
Sole
Sole and exclusive troubadour:
Breaks the silence
Experience that knifes
Silence itself
This night
This night.
