Nightmare Poem by Gary Vanderbur

Nightmare

Falling, into what?
Something I cannot sense.
A void; vast, incomprehensible nothingness.
Around me the silence assails my ears.
Deafening, directionless quiet.

Suddenly, I become aware of solidity below me.
A subtle change in my surroundings.
Excitedly, I search for the presence in my nothingness.
Then, my excitement turns to terror as I realize
The intruder is rushing up to meet me.

'NO! ' I scream.

I lie still, slowing awakening to the feel
Of the cold floor below me.
