No We Cannot Change What Has Happened Poem by Francis Duggan

No we cannot change what has happened we can only learn from the past
Though some lessons we've learned from living in our memories do not seem to last
Some of our mistakes we do keep repeating and for our every mistake we do pay
Some from the past never do learn and that does seem a sad thing to say
I happen to be that sort of a person since past mistakes I do repeat
But then people like me are not rare and my type are not hard to meet
But then perhaps I am in good company some of the World's most powerful leaders from history don't learn
They wage war without even considering the consequences they lack in the power to discern
That their actions bring about suffering and death does not seem to bother them at all
Mistakes of the past are repeated when history we do not recall
From my mistakes I do not learn but the one to suffer from that only me
My mistakes have not caused others to die or to suffer through life with a bad injury
No we cannot change what has happened though from our mistakes we should learn
Though many including your's truly do lack in the power to discern.
