Nobody Knows Poem by Dante Rose

Nobody Knows

She was born in the city, her clothes were on fire when they met
He came down from the country, a farm-boy who made too many bets
Raised up neath’ the wind, she had to take what she could get
In a stolen Ford Pickup, with the scent of a thousand cigarettes

He made candle-light shadows on paper-thin walls where they slept
After shouting him down, she showed him the letters she had kept
He tore them to pieces, and showered the floor where she swept
She threw on a gown and ran into the street where she wept
She wept…

“Nobody knows you, nobody knows you, nobody knows you like me
Nobody cares who fires you and throws you, nobody knows you like me”

With the rats and dirty water, the house became too much to bear
The father of the bride took a shot-gun and said his last prayer
The suicide stench rotted in the locks of her hair
They were homeless within days before joining a travelling fair

He played the songs of James Taylor while she told peoples fortunes for cash
When the police came to call it’s said that they left in a flash
They found a sweat soaked young girl pregnant with a mouth-full of hash
Cut up and crushed in the wreckage of an inter-state crash
Whispering…

“Nobody knows you, nobody knows you, nobody knows you like me
Nobody cares who fires you and throws you, nobody knows you like me”

So the romance it ended as she buried her husband at dawn
The birds in the trees were the only congregation to mourn
The hobo’s still speak of the blonde girl with brown eyes forlorn
Wandering aimlessly waiting for her child to be born
Singing…

“Nobody knows you, nobody knows you, nobody knows you like me
Nobody cares who fires you and throws you, nobody knows you like me”
