Antonio Dias (Hamilton, Ontario)
Nothing Really Matters
Why is everyone so superficial?
Because that's life.
No one cares about anyone else
Unless they somehow benefit.
Nothing is changing
Except for my realization
That nothing will ever be different;
That everything I hate about life
Will stay the same,
Because every shallow person around me
Is staying the same,
And aiming for the top of the social ladder.
Because, really, what else matters?
It's all about who's getting drunk,
Who has the friends,
And who's having sex.
In this society,
Nothing else matters.
Nothing really matters.
It's like I'm the only person
Who can see it,
And I'm the only person
Who can't stand it.
It makes no sense to me
Why people are so focused
On these selfish things,
When there are so many greater problems
In the world,
And so many better friends in life.
And the sad part is
It's only getting worse.
