Nothing Such As This Poem by Brandi Parker

Nothing Such As This

i look back on my life ten years ago
i was a different person then
i had more hope when i was naive
now and then i receive a spark
that dies before catching
no fire blazing burning in my soul
coldness surrounds me like water
i am emmersed
i used to believe in love
i used to thirst for it with passion
and insatiably crave what i thought
it could bring
now i wade through the ashes
of a life i burnt to the ground
wondering where it all started
and how it ended without notice
no understanding of the provocation
the sudden death of a lifetime of hope
there have been waning moments
but nothing such as this
i'm covered in soot
filth to a degree
smudges mark my face and body
scars from battles fought with
all my courage of conviction
half torn patches flutter in the wind
as i wear my heart on my sleeve
evidence apparent that i haven't been too careful
i've slept with the enemy more than once
hungry for the lies it told
starving to believe the semblance
it took of the apparition
of love
one day i hope to say those lies
were nothing
nothing such as the truth
nothing such as this.
