O Beija-Flor (The Hummingbird)

Rating: 4.5

A palavra 'beija-flor'
é uma que eu adoro
porque aquele passarinho
junto com outros ou sozinho
passa a vida inteira
beijando as flores da fronteira.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Beija-flor is the Portuguese word for hummingbird. It comes from the verb 'beijar' which means 'to kiss' and the noun 'flor' which means 'flower', so what Americans call a hummingbird, Brazilians call a 'kiss-flower' or a 'flower-kisser'.

Translation:

The word 'beija-flor'
is one that I adore
because that little bird
together with others or all alone
spends his entire life
kissing the flowers of the frontier.
