A very beautiful poem of faith. I am surprised I have not seen this published often in anthologies. It's a smooth read, the language isn't offputtingly archaic, and those celestial images are truly magnificent and other worldly! (Report) Reply

The creation of God surprises us through various moods and shades of nature around us:
Th' unwearied Sun, from day to day,
The work of an Almighty Hand.
'The Hand that made us is Divine.'

    Nice work
What though, in solemn silence, all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball?
What though nor real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found?
In Reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice,
For ever singing, as they shine,
'The Hand that made us is Divine
    Nice work.
    Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful poetry but I do not believe the sun and moon proclaim their origins as Joseph Addison implies, we watch observe listen to nature, impose meaning due to our own cultural beliefs, true understanding seems to lurk between scientific advancements and moments of eureka. (Report) Reply

This is one of the most beautiful poems that I have ever read.
It tells of the universe and all of its wonderful attributes. Written
with pure love and admiration for planet earth. Excellent.

I do not believe in god or anything of the sort, but that matters little here (to me) .
This is a finely written piece of work, both clever and artistic.

Great poem indeed; some of those lines one would read from top to bottom without feeling tired but instead yearn for more. (Report) Reply

What I found intriguing is how the poet, Joseph Addison has dug out the second line ryhming perfectly in the meaning of the first line? But I believe master poets like Him are capable of picking a line out of wind, so to say.I found the poem very simple, yet very deep in meaning.

Addison is saying that the way the universe is put together can only be by the hand of a great and devine intelegence, meaning God. The poetry is very good the way it is put together. (Report) Reply
