Old Mac Poem by Francis Duggan

Old Mac

He talked of his Country's flag on the flagpost in his front yard and we listened to his loud brag
Though I thought to myself the silly old bugger he carries his pride in a flag
Those piece of cloths give rise to trouble and cause International strife
And it saddens me to think a young soldier for a flag will give his gift of life.

Old Mac he is in his mid eighties but the years have not brought him much sense
But he remains true to his feelings that I will say in his defence
He fought in World war two in the forties and his son fought for the flag in Vietnam
The son followed in his dad's footsteps he too a patriotic man.

Old Mac I do not have that much time for and he doesn't have much time for me
He knows I am not patriotic or not an ex soldier like he,
He talks proudly of his achievements and his war days he loves to recall
Some men as they grow old don't grow wise and he has not learned from life at all.

He talks of the flag in his front yard with a sense of patriotic pride
The flag that young men go to war for and the flag that young men for have died
If you wish to hear his war stories just buy him a couple of beers
Some men as they grow old don't grow wise and wisdom don't come with the years.
