Old Maisie Poem by Francis Duggan

Old Maisie

Try to be nice as you can be to others since on your attitude to others you've a choice
And to be nice will not have you out of pocket it does not cost one money to be nice
To smile and say hello attracts like feelings since a grumpy person few do wish to know
Those who can smile easily are liked by others since they have been blessed with the inner glow
Old Maisie in her eighties who lives nearby she is one I always do love to meet
Her lovely smile it adds to her great charm she is the nicest person on our street
Her only offspring a son drowned whilst swimming in his twenties and her husband in a work accident died
Yet despite her crosses she is always happy though luck in life has not been on her side
With little money she survives on a pension an aged woman living on her own
But thanks to her cheerful disposition her friends are many a woman who is well loved and well known
Were she withdrawn and with life feeling hard done by she would be treated as a stranger of the town
But happy people attract others to them like it is said can't keep a good one down
A cheerful disposition wins one friends and admirers of that Maisie is a living proof
She would not be the darling of the neighbourhood if she were serious, downcast and aloof.
