On A Distant Shore Poem by norman hale

On A Distant Shore

On a distant shore
Patiently she stands
Waiting for the ship
To bring home her man

She has paced that beach
Enough to turn rock in to sand
Just pacing back and forth
As she keeps missing her man

It has been so long
Since she's held him tight
But, finally her prayers
Will be answered tonight

He was called off
To fight a distant war
But, he's headed home
With both outer and inner scars

Tonight he'll come home
To the love of his life
He'll finally see his son
And spend time with his wife

She's cried enough tears
To flood the local river
Many nights she has cried
Herself to sleep with a cold shiver

Now, off in the distance
She can see the ships lights
As her tears of joys
Come rushing in the night

The ship has now stopped
And the smaller boats come in
In the front of the first boat
Is none other than her man

He jumps out of the boat
And runs to her loving face
She meets him part of the way
He wipes away those tears every trace

They hold each other
What seems, to others for hours
Their love has been on hold
But, saved by much higher powers

At last they're together
To hold each other tight
You won't find them apart
In the future day or night

So thank your local soldiers
You'll never know what they've seen
Or the Hell the went through
So you could fulfill your dreams
