On Receiving A Blue Wren Feather Poem by Francis Duggan

On Receiving A Blue Wren Feather

Received this from a friend of mine today
This gift for you for christmas she did say
Off of small, small bird predominantly blue
For Nature loving person such as you.

This morning as I left for work at eight
I spied it there beside my garden gate
And I thought of you and it I could not pass
So I bent and plucked it from the dew sprayed grass.

A feather off of tiny bird blue wren
I've seen them in family groups of four to ten
They chase insects and pipe sweet melody
In tangled undergrowth and sapling tree.

Adult blue wren scarce larger than large butterfly
And male with colours meant to catch the eye
They hop on ground with tails cocked towards the sky
And burst forth in a sudden song of joy.

A male blue wren feather brown and blue and gray
From friend of mine to keep and put away
And though financially no better off I'll be
It's the thought that counts and that means more to me.
