On Stella Cashman's Bronze Medal Poem by Francis Duggan

On Stella Cashman's Bronze Medal

Rating: 0.5

I have heard how Stella Cashman walked to glory
She hailed from Tullig hill above Millstreet
She won a World bronze medal for walking
By any standard an amazing feat.

She's in the Hall of Fame with Willie Neenan
He won world silver back in eighty three
On his return he was feted in Millstreet
That night of nights still in my memory.

But Stella Cashman lives away from Millstreet
Perhaps at least six thousand miles away
Correct me if I'm wrong somebody told me
She lives in some part of the U.S.A

She left Millstreet years back when I was younger
And her I only visually did know
And who could tell back then she'd be a champion
On looking back it seems so long ago.

Another champion athlete from Duhallow
May Stella Cashman walk on with a will
The U.S.A. may now lay claim upon her
But she once lived near that Town by Clara hill.

And when Stella Cashman stode out with the World's best
And walked her way to glory and renown
And showed her medal to friends and admirers
I bet her thoughts flashed back to Millstreet Town.

She see the road that lead up to the mountains
Old Mushera and the high fields all around
In moments of success and satisfaction
Our thought return again to native ground.

Good on you Stella Cashman you're a winner
And you've proved yourself a marvellous athlete
The U.S.A. may now lay claim upon you
But you are still a woman from Millstreet.
