On The Ferry To Ireland Poem by Andrew Hamm

On The Ferry To Ireland

The coach enters the ferry terminal
At the Port of Holyhead
Caergybi in Welsh.
The coach stops.
Passport check.
I get back on the coach
Which takes me to the ferry.

After getting off
I climb the stairs to Deck 7
The deck with the facilities
A shop, a bar
Even a two-screen cinema

I rise to Deck 9
The outdoor deck
To see a night view of Caergybi
And at the other side,
The black, black Irish Sea.

The ship departs
I see Holyhead getting smaller and smaller
Until it disappears
I go to the cinema
The film starts
I sit munching my popcorn
Watching the movie until it ends
Then up onto Deck 9

The sea is still black,
But what’s this I see
In the horizon?
It’s lights –
The city lights of Dublin
Eventually, the ferry arrives
In Dublin
Capital of Ireland
