Hi,
I'm not really 'into' poetry.
However............
I was discussing, with a friend, the way things are taught these days. From what I hear, a large percentage of University applicants can't spell or use proper English. I told him that when I went to school, we learned reading using phonics, and spelling using memory. The spelling also came with the help of little rhymes like ' i before e except after c'......etc.'
Apparently phonics is now considered 'old fashioned'.
He said (regarding the spelling) 'how could you remember all that'?
I said that we used to have a class called 'memory class'. I don't think that's around anymore either.
Anyway, I told him that memory class was very useful and to prove it I quoted a poem that I had learned in grade 4 memory class. (I'm 64 years old. He is 22)
But I couldn't remember the second last stanza. He suggested I look it up on the internet. I told him I didn't think it was a 'real' poem. I thought it was probably written by the teacher, just for the class. But I decided to check it out anyway.
To my total amazement I found 'The Ships of Yule' on your site, and also that it was written by a 'real' poet! I'm really, TOTALLY, amazed. I hadn't heard or seen that since grade 4, and had always thought it wasn't a 'real' poem anyway. So I read the whole thing, and now I remember the four lines that I couldn't remember. Very amazing! Well, for me anyway.
